Am doing a 12 hour shift on Sunday and am 17 years old. Illegal???

Hi

I have a job at a garden centre and we have a stock take coming up this Sunday. They have a lot of weekend staff all who are students and they have basically forced us into working a 12 hour shift on Sunday as well as working 6 on the Saturday. We are entitled to an hour and a half break but we don't get paid for an hour of that. I'm sure i've heard somewhere that on a Sunday under 18's aren't supposed to work over 9 hours and a worker told me we're too young to work it. It starts at 9am and finsihes at 9pm and i have to wake up for school the next day for 6:30. Argh!!! Is there anything here that is illegal at all?Working it is going to be hard but the way they forced us into saying yes was terrible, they just assumed we would and asked us if it would be 9am till 9pm or 11am till 11pm.

Any legit suggestions will be welcomed as usual

thank you

Sounds like you're in the UK, based upon your spelling and other terms.

If you are in the UK, then here is the information you need:

16 and 17 year olds

If you're no longer at school and you're 16 or 17, the law refers to you as a young worker. Because you will no longer be at school, there are fewer restrictions on when you can work and for how long, but there are still some rules.

You'll only be able to work for eight hours every day, or a total of 40 hours over the course of a week. You cannot usually work an overnight shift either, but there are some exceptional circumstances where you can.

Because you've reached school leaving age, you may find that employers may be more willing to offer you part-time or full-time employment. You're also not limited to just 'light work', so you'll be allowed to work in places like a busy shop, restaurant kitchen or as a waiter or waitress.

So, if you're in the UK, then IT IS NOT OKAY to work 12 hours in a day!

If you're in CA, unless you've graduated from high school, you cannot work more than 8 hours in a day.

Hope this helps! ^_^
Reply:Sucks, but since it isn't a school day, they can work you that long.
Reply:Yes, it is illegal based on Federal Laws for employing minors under the age of 18. I think you can only work until 6 or 7pm. Check out www.youthrules.gov. Good Luck.
Reply:In some states it would be OK, but not in all. What state do you work in?
Reply:Oh my god! If I whined like that my parents would have freaked out. Just count your blessings that you HAVE a job, and that your boss was kind enough to give you so many hours!! What kind of whimps are being raised these days?

I bet you don't even have to contribute to the family expenses, either...

you know, 17 is pretty close to adulthood. maybe it is time to grow up and do more work than play!
Reply:In the UK: YES.
Reply:In Ireland that is illegal yes. If you are in a trade union contact them!

Reply:First off they don't force you to do anything...if you don't like it go somewhere else....if not ....suck it up and quite whining
