My cockatiel?

hello i have a lutino cockatiel, in a very large cage with quite a few toys, i brought him from a garden centre (not the best place) i was told he was a male. i paid 35 pounds for him and he does look quite young. ive had him for about 2 months and he is hand tame and can be scratched and stroked once out the cage. i let him out every day for quite a long time and he is allowed to fly. the thing is he is very quiet and doesnt seem to play with its toys he does bite but not hard at all and only normaly when you put your hand in. i realy dont know why his so quiet in his cage he just sit on his perch unless hi hungry or out his cage. i have taken him to the vet but they said he seems fine any1 had the same kind of bird

My cockatiel?
It's a healthy FEMALE. They can live to be 20 yrs. Don't worry about her. Females are less vocal than males.
Reply:The person above me answered you well but I wanted to add that unless they sexed him with DNA, there is no way to visually sex a Lutino cockatiel.

If he is still young, that could also be a reason for his quietness but like she said, it could also be personality. I have 6 tiels, 5 boys and 1 girl (lutino girl) and some of my boys are loud but I have one who is extremely quiet, rarely wants to come out and just real mellow. Others come running to me for scritches and come right out. They do have their own personalities.
Reply:Not getting enough sleep effects birds in many ways. For most Birds 10 to 12 hours of rest is recommended. Also many birds purchased at such places have not been exposed to many toys. My bird is a rescue bird - that had never seen a toy until she came to me. It took a few months before she showed any interest in her toys. Now she plays with them a lot! Keep trying different types and sizes of toys to find out what you bird likes. Encourage your bird to play with his toys by playing with them yourself in front of him.
Reply:First, make certain that the vet you take the bird to is an Avian vet, with experience treating Cockatiels.

Then, make certain that the bird is getting the proper nutrition, and that you interact with him when he is out of his cage. Perhaps the toys just aren't enough stimuli for him.

Finally, remember that birds, just like people, have different personalities. Perhaps your tiel is just an introvert.
Reply:I have the same kind of bird. Recently found that that he is 7 not one like i was told (found someone that knew what the letters on the leg band ment) He doesn't do much either.. Doesn't play with the toys and will only come out of his cage on his own everyonce in a while. Other wise I have to take him out. Mine does the same bitting thing too. Wierd!
