UK only: What do you think of Wythenshaw (North West UK))?

I am about to buy my first house in the North West with someone.

We have been looking in Saldord, which is very close to the centre of Manchester but never found a good 3 bed house with garden in this area - alsways something wrong.. . too expensive or the garden is inexistant..

We ended up finding something in Wythenshaw, which doesn't seem to have a heart nor a soul as a town.. only a big gym and a brand new Asda. Let me know if I am wrong because the house we found is really nice and has a garden!

We both work in Didsbury...

Thanks

Hmmm wythenshawe is a bit rough in places but then so is Salford. If you work in Didsbury then I think that is the best place to look for activities - meals, pubs etc. Also Fallowfield is good for activities. Hard to find a house in Manchester generally at the mo.
Reply:No, you are not wrong about Wythenshaw. It has been recognised as a dump for many, many years. The problem is the 1960's shopping centre, lack of investment by Manchester City Council time and time again, and the high crime rate. Why didn't you try Stockport? Seven miles from the city centre, good shopping facilities, good train services, good bus services-No 42 to Disdbury every 20 minutes, and with in driving distance of Didsbury too. Good council properties, reasonable rents, and nice areas to live in too-with gardens! And the trams are coming too-through Didsbury-in the next five years. And consider Heaton Moor and Heaton Mersey, Reddish too. Forget Cheadle, Hazel Grove, Bramhall, and Gatley-to expensive.
Reply:I just answered your other question...

Don't consider Wythenshawe, it is really rough and is a high crime area.

Try other areas of South Manchester - Fallowfield, Withington (both very studenty, but OK), Heald Green or into Cheshire, Gatley or Cheadle. More expensive than Wythenshawe, but worth it.
Reply:It's a nice place i've heard but it can get cold in the winter!! (lots of snow!!!!)
Reply:Wythenshaw was originally quite a 'posh' suburb of Manchester. Like all areas when they get over 100 years old they tend to need constant re generation.

You are well placed to access the city amenities and Wythenshaw is definitely better than Salford as an overall area. Check with the local police station and ask for the general crime rate in the area. Take a look at the local primary school is the building in good repair and is there a lot of litter in the area. That will tell you whether the local residents have some pride. I think you will find that the people of Wythenshaw do care about their area for the most part.
Reply:I would go for Wythenshaw over Salford. Salford has alwats seemed a bit rough to me (sorry mancunians!!)
