Dog house training please help!?
I would definitely crate train them, tis gives them a safe place to go and sleep but make sure the crate isn't too big, because then they would designate and area for the bathroom and an area for sleeping. You can find a bunch of helpful websites on crate training, it's pretty easy!

In the meantime though, pet stores sell these sheet that are like 2ft by 2 ft that you place on the floor that have some kind of chemical on them that causes the dog to want to only pee in that area. Just place in on the ground where you want them to pee and you should be great! I swear by these, they are awesome! Good luck! ^.^
Reply:Hi

They need a schedule. You will probably have to start at the beginning with crate training. They should be confined when you are our of the house or sleeping. They also need a strict food and water schedule, that corresponds to bathroom breaks. Anywhere they have gone to the bathroom inside the house, needs to be cleaned, and the odor removed, or it will attract them.

Best of luck.
Reply:well what i was going to say is basically the same as the really long one but still...

what we did with our dogs is every time they did anyhting in the house we would smack them(not hard), then if they were peeing or pooing in front of us we would pick them up and put them in the garden and praise them when they finish in the garden.

we didnt tie them outside or do any of that, just praised them when they did it outside and eventually they went to the back door if they needed to releive themselves.
Reply:Crate training is a very easy way to curb night time bathroom breaks. Dogs naturally do not want to use the bathroom where they sleep.
Reply:Always bear in mind that a dog evacuates his bowels on waking in the morning, after a meal, and about 3 hours after a meal, especially as a puppy.

As soon as he wakes in the morning, and after every nap, take him directly outdoors on a leash and collar to empty his bladder and/or bowel.

Take him to the same place each time, stay with him and give him 10-15 minutes to "perform".

I find that an expression associated with the action is very helpful in the teaching process.

You choose your own words – “go potty” or "time for business" etc.

When the same phrase is repeated over a few days, the pup learns what it is you want of him very quickly. Your puppy is a very intelligent dog and eager to please you.

When he does what you've requested of him, heap praise on him (“good potty!”) and bring him back into the house immediately and give him a little reward treat.

There should be no outdoor play until he has it firmly in his mind that the outdoors is the place to go to relieve himself, and is giving you signals that he needs to go out (and RIGHT NOW).

This may be whining, circling, sniffing at various places or going towards the door. IT'S UP TO YOU TO LEARN TO READ HIS MESSAGES!!!

Remember that you are dealing with a baby with a small bladder, and you should expect to have accidents to clean up until he is about 6 months old.

When accidents do happen, DO NOT RUB HIS NOSE IN IT, OR HIT HIM. A rolled up newspaper has no value in teaching a dog.

You wouldn't do that to a child or want it done to you.

YOUR PUP DOES HAVE DIGNITY TOO!!!

You can clean up the accident using Hydrogen Peroxide (it’s the best for cleaning up any doggie mess).

The dog crate will be your most valuable asset in the house-training effort. Dogs are den animals and he will not want to soil his sleeping area if he can help it. Therefore, the crate should be divided or partitioned off to where it is only big enough to lay down or turn around in.

He will whine or bark from the crate when he needs to go out, but he will do that too if he just wants to be with you. This is what we call the "Puppy Con" and you'll have to learn to differentiate between them. Ignore the message and you might be cleaning up a mess!
Reply:These dogs have been kept in a kennel where they have been forced to pee and poop inside the cage. Therefore crate training for these two would not work.

You have to basically house break them as if they are 8 weeks old and never been taught, because you don't know the reason they were at the shelter to begin with. Maybe the previous owners did not teach them to toilet properly and therefore gave them up for adoption because they were too lazy to train them.

So that's what you have to do. Leaving the door open for them when they don't know that outside is where they are supposed to go is useless. It's like taking the diaper off of a baby and expecting them to use the big girl toilet. And that's what you're doing. Because of their age you're expecting them to "know" what to do and you're assuming the former owners taught them to toilet correctly.

In order to "train" them properly you cannot just open the door and let them out, you have to leash them up and "show" them what the outside is for.

Take one out first thing in the morning, leash him up and take him to a spot in the yard, walk him around and say potty time or go potty, when he lifts his leg or whatever say good potty and praise him and treat him, then try for poop, if you've got to stand there for 10 minutes then that's what you do, when he eliminates reward and praise, then take the second dog out same thing.

take them inside to eat then repeat again an hour later. Ignore when they go in the house, do not punish they don't understand all they see is an out of control person yelling and smacking for no reason it doesn't work. Just clean really well so it doesn't encourage them. Keep this up every time they need to go outside every couple of hours, do not just give them access until they are 100% housebroken and no longer having accidents in the house.

Do not let them graze and eat all day, feed only 2 x a day once in the morning then again at night, do not feed after 5 pm and pick up their water bowl after 7 pm, make sure they go out to eliminate several times before bed and then last time before bed then they should be able to hold it all night long till you can take them out first thing in the morning.

Be consistent and be patient.
