Why do bookies only pay out for snow on xmas day if it snows on London weather centre/?

Many years ago i had a ￡100 bet with Ladbrokes with odds of 11/10 that it would snow on xmas day.I woke early that morning about 6am to open prezzies with my son,to my joy on opening back door their was a layer of snow on the garden,my son gets to see snow and i've won my bet so i thought.The next day on my way to a match i went onto bookies to collect my bet,when told i hadn't won i was dismayed how was this not so.The staff couldn't help so i phoned Ladbrokes head office to be told it had to snow on the London weather centre for the bet to be won.Snow is snow surely? weather it falls in London or Birmingham[where i live],it snowed xmas day that was the bet end of story.I was extremely irate the amount of the bet and the winnings was imaterial it was the principal of the thing.I have since never placed the same bet and never entered a Ladbrokes shop,i'm still confused as to why just the London weather center?.I'd apprecciate the views of any body on this matter is bet still the same?.

Reply:The Post Office Tower used to be the designated place for snow to be observed. The bookies want a reliable and disinterested observer so they use the official observations from the London Weather Centre to determine if snow fell in London on Christmas Day. If you want to bet on snow in Birmingham, you have to specify that in the bet with the bookie and the odds will be different from London. The bookies will then designate an official observing station in Birmingham to determine if snow fell there or not.



Most people bet on snow in London so the published odds are for London - and will say so.
Reply:the simple reason is that the london weather centre is the least likely place in the british isles where snow will be recorded on xmas day, so that is why bookies choose the place to verify the bets and it catches 1000s out each year giving the bookies as usual the edge on all bets placed.

just remember you can state to the bookies which place you want to nominate for snow on xmas day and they will give you revised odds the further north the shorter the odds and it is to be weather station so it can be verified
Reply:This is the standard bet otherwise it would be impossible to prove or disprove ie it could have snowed halfway up a Scottish mountain and no one saw it. Betting has to have parameters but they should have made you aware of it when you placed the bet.
Reply:The problem is that there are not many reliable weather stations that are staffed on Christmas Day! This one is so that is why it is used.

Reply:Given the fact the "london weather centre" is situated in the heart of london city...I would guess the "latent upcurrents "of heavily polluted and unnaturally warmed air would make it a winner for the bookies,the thames used to freeze in winter a long time ago,they even had "fairs" on it!!...I know we have global warming issues, but it's the heated buildings that will stop the thames from freezing again...even if we experienced a really severe winter!!! A three-legged horse bet,unless they included all off greater london,..in which case the odds(as they are aware) would be null!!
