What is the point of music in shops?

and wot about buskers in the shopping centre streets or entertainers in covent garden?

What is the point of music in shops?
Music in the supermarkets etc is to relax you and to make you happy and therefore put more goods into your shopping trolley. I quite like the music as long as it stays background music and not full in your face music, that can put me off shopping. A long time ago now, I was in a supermarket with my family and they were playing 60's music and I was singing my heart out as I went round the store. The problem was I was so busy singing and shopping I did not realise that the music on the loud speaker had been turned off and I was there singing away to the shop! I knew there was something wrong when I turned round and my family had disowned me and were in another part of the store!

Buskers in the street well some people call them beggers, call them what you want, but they are usually darn good musicians/singers. So in answer to your question I like buskers and I like music in shops.
Reply:I agree it's to take your mind off of the prices and such and put you into a spending mood... but I have had the opposite happen on many occasions.

I know it's a matter of their target audience, but some stores play music that just is plain old annoying to me and makes me want to leave as soon as possible. Example, I was looking for some sneakers so went to one of the numerous shoe stores at the mall. Walking in the door I got bombarded with loud thumping rap or R%26amp;B. Not to make a statement on good vs bad music since it is a matter of taste, I really disliked it and wound up leaving without buying anything within 5 minutes. Repeat at several other athletic shoe type places. Finally found some at a sporting goods store playing some mellow backround music.

So, while it can help, it can also hurt.
Reply:Music in shops are to destract shoppers from stingy buying. Depending on the music, shops try to control the feelings of the shopper and make them feel carefree about the prices of stuff. The malls try to make shopping as entertainment instead of what it really is - a necessity.
Reply:Yes, your 1st answerer hit the nail on the head. Sadly, it's counter-productive for me as I often have to leave a shop because I can't stand the music being played. However, buskers often play music I want to hear so I will pay for the pleasure they have given me.
Reply:The point of music in shops is mainly to attract customers, it may also make potential buyers relax and give the customers a good impression of the store. They make shops look nice, and comfy so their customers will go back again.
Reply:The point of music in shops is to try and keep the customers happy. Let's say if it was quiet and to people were in a convo. A lot of people near them could hear!

So music keeps it loud and happy.

idk about the centre streets thing sorry!
Reply:Music in shops is to make you happy so that you will hopefully buy more. Buskers are trying to make money.
