I am moving to manchester for a new job any advice?

i am moving to manchester next month as i have a job in in piccadilly gardens, i need to rent somewhere but coming from london i have no idea what its like, i would like to live in the city centre and have been looking around deansgate, could anybody let me know where the best places to stay are, or where i really should avoid? im a 20 year old male and would like to be somewhere lively and near good bars etc.

Manchester city centre is pretty expensive to live and not the safest place to be. I am not sure I would want to live in city centre if I were you.





I would rent a flat near prestwich and take tram to work albeit tram currently is not working.





Lots of pubs in city centre - you can pick up chicks in bars after work and take them to your flat by tram.
Reply:Manchester is a dump. I used to live in Didsbury which is one of the poshest areas. What is posh to a Mancunian is a slum to anyone else. If you drink out of a mug without chips they think you are gay.


The city centre is very expensive. You will need a footballer's wage to afford anything half decent. I would look for areas that are further out on the Metro or train line to the airport because that one runs all night.


Try these areas, they are on the up and within easy walking distance of the centre. Ancoats, being slowly gentrified. New flats being built alongside the old tenement type council flats.


Collyhurst has 3 or 4 tower blocks that belonged to the council but have been sold off to a private developer. They have been empty for a couple of years, but the rumours are they will be sold to first time buyers/shared ownership schemes/affordable housing. On the metro line too,about 6 mins to city centre.


DO NOT go to Longsight, Moss Side, Levenshumle, Whalley Range,all dodgy areas at night especially if you are coming home from a night out. They rob your houses too.


Hulme aint bad now that they have pulled it down. They have just built newer slums. Again can be dodgy but handy for city centre bars.


You could try Manchester City Council website for housing.


They list all their empty flats that you bid for.
Reply:there are some good apartments and complexes around Deansgate and also near to Oxford road is good but ffs stay away from Salford, Hulme, Moss Side no matter what your letting agent tells you

Reply:Living anywhere decent right in the city centre is likley to be horrendously expensive, since it is nearly all at the luxury end of the market.





There are a number of redevelopments and newbuilds just on the fringe of the city centre but as nice as the properties themselves may be, the immediate area isn't always of the same standard.
Reply:printworks for bars and clubs,also deansgate locks,peter street,canal street (gay village)


loads of different places for you to taste...


you will have time of your life...





castlefield,number 1 deansgate hulme is ideal really grown into hotspot for young profs with luxury small flats,apartments..stay clear of chavy areas like gorton,longsight,wythenshawe..

Im guessing as with everywhere you may decide to live, any1 deciding in the UK, a place and four walls are what you make them. You can live in a big city where there are loads of people and still be lonely. Your friends are what will make or break a place for you at the end of the day and you will meet them when you start your new job. Im guessing they will be full of advice for you.





You could even stay in a bed and breakfast (lots of landladies will be eager to give you good rates for long term stays) or even consider 'lodging' somewhere until you find your feet. Maybe someone you get to like at work will be looking for someone to share a property with...





The worse thing you could do, I think, is rush into it,


You may get lumbered with a property in an area you hate... so I would look out for the 'diggs type' of accommodation before you sign yourself into somewhere with a huge deposit in an area you are unfamiliar with.





Dont let people here put you off.. There are good and bad areas everywhere....

Reply:Maybe you could try UNITE accomodation. I think they got a place near Deansgate; the one I stayed at was in Whitworth Park.





My advice? Lock things up ... securely! I recently graduated, but when I was at Manchester University:


1) my bike was stolen.


2) the place I was renting got broken into (I lived on the edge of Longsight then).


3) my replacement bike was stolen (at UNITE).


4) someone in my accomodation block had his/her car stolen.


5) someone had a go at my bro's car when we were eating near Piccadily Gardens.





Avoid at all costs ... Mosspit. Crime central.

Reply:I would go to Hale or Altrincham quick to get to the city but plenty to do there and fewer students so accom is better I personally wouldn't live in the city center north manchester is a bit like lancashire east manchester probably a no go area for a new comer stockport and tameside the same but anywhere south/south west
Reply:I have lived in Manchester all my life and it does have bad and good people like any other place, so some people who called us robbing ***** should keep their opinions to themselves, I live in Collyhurst and their is lots of lovely apartments being built in and around this area, I hope you find a good job and place to live and good luck, there are some places to avoid but once settled you will find this out, Good Luck Ryan
