What about communes?

I've wanted to start a commune type place for awhile but have no idea how. I was thinkin, like, a small building with sleeping rooms for bad weather, a kitchen, %26amp; a sign in hall %26amp; the rest is outdoors w/ teaching areas, LOTS of garden space/growing space, %26amp; some weaving centres for the clothing. What I dont want it to wind up, however, is one huge party all the time place, seen as a homeless shelter/drop-in type of place, or a lot of government stickyournoseinit stuff. Definitely in california or louisiana too. also, please, nothing rude or pointless or how/why I cant do this, just how I can do this. Please, if anyone has any answers, it'd be greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone knows of a place in the u.s. thats already like this? thanks.

What about communes?
You will have to be extremely selective about who is "invited" to join. Otherwise you will be overrun with drifters, loafers, and druggies, not to mention those just looking for a free ride.
Reply:Try researching "cooperative living" instead of communes (which imply more of a top-down, government-restricted organization).

You might have better luck in California or Arizona than in the South... we are more used to alternative living styles out here. Try seeing how other co-ops are run, and see what works and what doesn't, and then plan your own.
Reply:If you want to know about communes, join one. By doing so, you'll not only learn about the good and bad of communes, but also meet some people who think the way you do and can help you create another commune that's to your liking and the liking of your friends.

Be aware however, that communes attract good and bad people, so you can easily become victimized if you're not street smart. Would hate to read about you in the news as "little-miss-goodie-two-shoes" who got raped, robbed, and killed by "society-reject-and-sociopath" who saw you as an easy mark.
