My Jack Russell wont let me sleep at night ... please help!?

I got a JRT (Buster) from the re-homing centre on Thursday evening, he's 7 months old, and his background is, he was found in an empty house back in March, he's a lovely little dog, extremely lively... But he wont leave my side, not for a second, i live in a ground floor 1 bedroom flat, i'm currently going through the potty training thing too, as at the moment he's wee'ing and poo'ing where ever he pleases, but the most annoying thing is that we'll go out for a long walk, and he wont do either, he'll wait till he comes back to the house, then pee or poo on the carpet, i've even tried leaving him on the leash, running through the house to the back garden hoping he'll go there, but no, he'll only do it inside the house ... I've tried ignoring him, no eye contact etc... but he just thinks i'm playing with him and barks more....

The other thing which is really getting me down, is the fact that he starts barking and howling if i attempt to lock him in the kitchen at night, if i lived in a house this wouldn't be a problem, but i have neighbours living upstairs with a small child, as you can imagine, they're less than impressed with this at 1am... So i thought, ok, i'll let him sleep next to the bed, but he wont stay on the floor, he'll jump on the bed, and start rubbing himself all over it. Each time i grab him by the collar, put him back on the floor, and tell him very sternly "NO", but he just barks at me, thinking i'm playing with him, and as soon as i let him go, he runs around the bed and jumps up again

I'm at my wits end, the only time he'll relax, is if i'm laying on the sofa, and he's laying on the floor next to me, but i find it really hard to sleep on the sofa, i've had less than 8 hrs sleep in the last 3 days, i'm so tired ... Anyone got any ideas how i can change this behaviour, i dont want to have to take him back to the centre, as i'm sure he'll be a great little dog if trained properly .. any help would be much appreciated...

My Jack Russell wont let me sleep at night ... please help!?
Bless him, he's a handsome little fella isn't he? Considering his background, being left in am empty house etc, he thinks its ok to go to the toilet indoors - there was no-one there to tell him otherwise! He's grown attached to you because you've been so very kind to him, he feels safe with you, knows he won't be hit or abused and wants to be with you 24/7 so he knows he'll be ok but its affecting your health and needs to stop! I'd advise a training school, they do them locally ( check your local paper or ring your vet for more details ) and are not expensive. Until then i'd advise keeping him out until he 'goes' or, when you get in from a walk and he starts sniffing around for a place to 'go', take him straight back out and wait until he does it - praise him like a loon when he does and he'll know that it pleases you so will want to do it again! Its hard work house training a puppy but you WILL get there - there is light at the end of the tunnel ha ha. Please persevere - in time you'll wonder what your life was like before he came into it, they change you and enrich your life in so many ways! I have a Jack, my first and i don't know what i'd do without him, he's so lovely, lively and funny! Best of luck to you both and well done you for adopting him!
Reply:Kennel train him.

Reply:Get him a crate and make him sleep in it. Try putting him in it during the day for small amounts of time and rewarding him when he doesn't bark.

Keep him confined in the house to a small pen in the kitchen until he can control himself. When he goes out don't "walk him" but take him to the same spot every time and tell him to "pee" and "poop" and reward him with praise when he does.

  • Cat behaviour problems following death of second cat?

I adopted 2 male neutered cats from a rescue centre 2 months ago. They were already a pair but completely different cats to look at - one is tabby and white, sinewy and muscly (Arthur) and the other a black and white moggy (Harry). Unfortunately, Harry was killed in a RTA last week and although I feel devastated inside, I am getting on with things because Arthur was showing signs of being affected by my sadness.

But Arthur is missing his playmate - they were both 10 months - 1 year old so would chase each other round the house and garden for hours at a time. Arthur has a lot of energy and although I am playing with him for up to 3 hours a day, it doesn't seem enough for him. He cries and talks a lot and has also stopped going into the garden (although he will sit at the open back door looking out and go out for a brief time if I am there). He is eating OK.

Should I be thinking about a new companion for him already?

Cat behaviour problems following death of second cat?
My condolenses on the loss of your cat Harry. Cats do grieve for the loss of a close companion, and whilst getting another cat might seem like a good idea, it might be best to wait a little bit. It's Harry that he misses, and with them being territorial creatures, any new cat would initially be seen as an intruder, which may just stress him. "When Cats Grieve" has lots of information and advice that you may find helpful.

Reply:I am sorry for your loss. My Gilbert lost his littermate sister when they were nine months old and he still is grieving at fourteen months, but he is MUCH happer now. I got him two new kittens to keep him company and at first he ignored them, but now runs with them, they groom each other, jumps and they are brothers and sister now. Cats do love their mates, just as we do, and have so much emotion and memory that it is aching to watch, but part of life. Give Arthur lots and lots of attention and love until you are ready to get another cat. Some people recommend an older cat close to his age and others a kitten. I just love starting from scratch with a kitten and they grow big so fast. It is up to you and you will know when it is time. You never replace the deceased kitty, but it is so wonderful to learn to love a new kitty and so will Arthur. If he does not, at least he will have company in the house when you are gone. I hope you are both well.
Reply:it might help him get one simalar age which is neutered and has been with other cats
Reply:well my cat hated our new dog at first but then time together they became best friends so wen we gave the dog away our cat was always expecting him to come home...i remember one time we had to look after my aunts dog who looks lik my old dog (a yr after we gave my dog away) and my cat came running and then relized it wasnt our dog and run the other direction then a few yrs a go we got another cat and my cat wasnt happy at first and now the still fight put its just something cats do and their more close now and snuggle on the coach togther so wat i'm sayin is that if you get a cat now or a cat in 5yrs from now...they just need time to get along
Reply:I'm sorry for your loss...Let your cat mourn for the meantime. At least he's still alive.

(my mom had two loving and beautiful siamese cats, male and the other female. when the female died, the male cat practically committed suicide by ingesting some chemical fertilizer.)

when you're thinking of getting another companion for Arthur, do not expect it to replace Harry.

Rather, have the pleasure of appreciating that all cats are unique. :)

Which is the best trip have you undertaken till date ?

Hampi was not on our radar, while traveling to Chitradurga Fort, we planned for just a weekend getaway from Bangalore by car. After finishing the trip to Kalline Kote, we instinctively decided why not rush to Hampi? It is just 150 kms away, with small stretch of 18 kms of bad road before Kudilgi on NH 13.

I happened to visit during 1978 along with my parents. In those days, it was typical village with a rustic atmosphere. There was not much interest among the tourist to visit this place, which was known as ruined city, without any guide we wandered cluelessly and we landed in the peak of summer to add to our discomfort. The only distinct memory was that of Inverted Gopuram of Virupakasha temple.

After a gap of nearly 30 years I find that a new civilization has emerged. Perhaps after Hampi being declared a world heritage site in 1987, a mind blowing transformation has taken place at Hampi. It is as if history is being re-written, with guides, autorikshaw round trip, bike guides, and professional tour operators unleashing knowledge to tourists.

There are exists lot of similarities between POMPEII %26amp; HAMPI. The common features are :

    1. Road Network 2. Water Management 3. Temple construction 4. Public functions 5. Common Bath 6. Cultural Festivity 7 Art %26amp; Sculpture 8. Well defined markets.9 Brothels Lane.

Trading activity were carried out between various parts of the world in both the periods. We find gems %26amp; jewellery being traded in the bazaars. All household articles such as pottery, grains, vegetables, fruits, beetlenut, flowers etc were being traded. Further brothel lanes were located in the bazaar for the visitors and artisans from outstation.

Our first point of visit was Virupaksha temple which was guided by a foreigner, because we ignored the offer to be guided @ Rs 400/- for a trip, which we thought was exhorbitant. We entered the Virupaksha temple without any enterance fee ( between 6.30 to 8 am it is free entry) The sheer grandeur started unraveling. On the left there is a sanctum which is occupied by tourists for changeover, which is really surprising. The main temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, who is supposed to have been captivated by the dedication of Pampadevi. Lord Shiva consented to marry Pampa in his avatar as Virupaksha, the presiding deity.

Behind the Virupaksha temple lies a room wherein we can view the inverted image of the main tower through a pin hole. It is application of Periscope principle.

The bazaar in front of the Virupakasha temple is proposed to be shifted to another place to maintain the heritage look. The proposed shopping centre will be the main reporting centre for Hampi excursion. An organized trip with eco friendly mode of transport would be ideal. Further a fixed guide charges would be also be ideal depending on no of spots toured or time spent concept.

After Virupaksha temple visit we walked across a lane adjescent to the right, just on a blinder, towards Hemkunta hill. Here one is astounded by the skills of rock carving work station.. It is like a canvas on which artist exhibits his painting. The granite was the main raw material for most types of monumental construction at the site – which was abundant in and around Hampi for over 200 kms. Traditionally, granite blocks were split by first cutting rows of closely spaced cubical holes into which wooden wedges were pounded. When wetted, the wedges expanded, thereby propagating deep cracks through the stone which split as per dimension required by the artisans.

We found almost four temples, one was literally filled with water on the entrance, and other not so prominent temples, maybe created for low strata people of the times, even the poojary of the temple just gave us some insight, for which he was suitably tipped. The overnight heavy rain had made the rocky surface quite slippery, it was an adventure to climb Hemkunta hillock. The entire Hampi area, is visible in all its panaromic view. There is an acropolis type of two storey structure maybe for the kings to view. There is no description on this monument to my surprise.

Once you start climbing down the steps which is neatly chiseled on the rocks it is adventurers delight, a neat landscaped garden leads to Sasvikalu Ganesha. It is a monolithic exposure of Lord Ganesha which is barricaded to prevent vandalism.

Next we walk across we, come to Dodda Ganesh, which is again vandalized by Sultans, it is now a crude form, luckily the sanctum and veranda in not pillaged, the sculptures are exhuberance of dance and drama of the bygone era. Ugra Narasimha monolithic statue is located nearby along with Badavi Linga installed by a poor women.

We got to know that autorikshaw guides are available @ Rs 250/- to take us around and we decided to hire such a guide. He spent 3 hours taking us around all the important landmark starting from Hemkunt Dodda Kalu Ganesh, Sasive Ganesh, Ugra Narasimha, Badavi Linga, Veerabhadra Temple, Lotus Mahal, Elephant’s Stable, Mahanavami Dibba, Hazaar Rama Temple %26amp; Vittala Temple.

At the Mahanavmi Dibba, a celebration for Nine days was unfolded by the royalty. The king witnessed the cultural programmes such as folk dances, puppet show, fancy dress, fireworks, military parade, procession of horses and elephants, beginning with pooja to lord Durga. Even today the Government of Karnataka is trying to recreate the tradition of Vijayanagar empire by organizing HAMPI UTSAV in November first week every year.

The Sultans wanted to build their own architectural edifice to match Vijaynagar rulers, Lotus Mahal, a summer resting palace was created. It had its own pond to cool the surroundings. Behind the Lotus Mahal, Elephant stables in 11 domed structure is built to house the royal animal. Once again this area is barricaded for renovation. Behind this stable if one is adventurous one can go on a trek to visit a temple winding into a mini forest. There is a small temple by the side of Lotus temple which on the outer wall of Lotus Mahal.

After disposing the auto guide. We visited independently visited the balance places Sri Krishna temple, where one notices the vandalism of Sultans, who literally burnt down the temple along with people. It is rarely visited by tourist, the sculpture work is marvelous.

Then went around back to Hazaar Rama temple, which is the ultimate exposure of the skills of the artisans on rock hewn walls, temples and pillars. It is a culmination of the golden era of Vijaynagar empire. It looks as if the Kings got into a mode of celeberation of life, without warfare. We find scenes from the epics Ramayana, hunting scenes, battleground warfare, courtesans entertaining the kings, hunting scene in olden days and in general description of all day to day events in the life of the royalty.

The underground Shiva temple is a marvel. It is fed by water channels, which have entered the temple premises due to lack of conservation effort. Will ASI do some quick thinking otherwise it meet the fate of Musical pillar at Vittala temple.

Museum at Kamalapura houses some of the restored sculptures and various other pieces of artwork is stored. Many foreign travelers scourge HAMPI in their quest for the hidden treasures of HAMPI by camping months together. Someday, someone is bound to hit the jackpot. Till then Hampi literally rocks.

I wrote a short story for school. Please read and tell me what you think!!!!?

    Imagine

I gazed out of the window, my eyes immediately transfixed on the beautiful bird outside. It stood in the centre of the lawn, its feathers glistening with the light from the sun. Its wings shone with an array of colours and at the tip of each one there was a thin gold tint. I stared vividly as it ruffled its head into one of its wings, sometimes completely vanishing out of view and then reappearing with chunks of feathers in its beak. It almost seemed like it was dancing and I tried to picture it surrounded by people watching it perform as if it were some endangered creature. I pressed my face against the glass wishing desperately that I could be outside in the sun with the bird than stuck in here. I felt like it had heard my thoughts because the next minute the bird stopped and inquisitively walked closer towards the window and its bead like eyes stared through the glass at me. Then all of a sudden its delicate wings transformed into much larger ones like an aeroplane and it took off. I waved at it through the window feeling guilty for having disturbed it . ‘I’m sorry,‘ I whispered quietly. I glanced back into the room where I stood . The ceiling towered above me and the pink flowery patterns of the walls matched my dress. I tugged on my pink bow that was in my hair almost wishing that if I did this the bird would come back.

“Sweet heart, why don’t you come sit back down,” my mother called. I walked from the window and sat down, adjusting my bow so that it fell into my hands. I dangled it between two of my fingers watching it as it fell helplessly to the ground. I did this several times until I got bored hoping that one time it would not want to fall to the ground but instead fly around the room. I picked up the piece of ribbon and looked up to see my sister making faces at me from the other side of the room. My mummy told me once that you should not make faces because when the wind changes you stay like that forever. I giggled as I pictured my sister looking like that when she was 50.

    -30 years later-

“Mummy, I can see it , I can see it.”

    “I saw it first though”

    “No you didn’t”

    “Yes I did.”

“ Well I said I’d seen it first.”

I looked up from the map that was spread across the seat on the other side of the car. I noticed the top of the house appearing over the trees ahead.

“ Look it doesn’t really matter who saw it first you can both see it now,” I said, hoping that this would stop them arguing. I turned the corner of the road and saw an opening to a drive ahead of me. I decided this was probably the right one and swerved the car down it. Ahead, stood the most beautiful house I had ever seen. It had been so long since I had come here with my parents, when I was little that I had forgotten how beautiful and huge it was. I stopped the car outside the front of the house. I looked closer at the house and realised that it looked much older and messier then I remembered with streams of ivy woven round the windows.

I knocked on the door hoping someone would answer. I picked up my youngest who looked like she was about to fall asleep and rested her in my arms.

“ Maybe no one lives here anymore,” I said.

My other daughter looked up at me with a magical smile. “Someone will come”, she said.

We waited a little bit longer but no one came. As I walked away from the door I heard a car driving up in the distance. A young women about the same age as me stepped out.

“Excuse me,” I said. “I was wondering if I could look round your garden with my children. I used to come here when I was younger with my family and me and my sister would play in the garden outside.”

“ Oh yes, of course but it might be a little untidy because I have only arrived recently and the last person did not keep it in very good condition.”

We walked round the back of the house and onto the lawn. Memories suddenly rushed into my mind. I remembered the pond that was near the bottom of the lawn and the time that me and my sister had been looking for frogs and one ended up on the back of my dress. I had hated frogs and the next few times we came I had been terrified to go near the pond. I also remembered the huge apple tree opposite us which we would climb and eat all the apples. I pointed out these places to my children and they rushed round them with excitement. I suddenly remembered the day when we had come here last and I saw the bird sitting on the lawn. I asked the lady if any of the last residents had kept any birds. She said she didn’t know. She asked if I would like a cup of tea and so she went back inside the house.

“ What did the bird look like,” my older daughter asked.

“ I can’t remember but it was really beautiful, but I don’t think it will ever come back.”

“What do you mean” she asked looking at me strangely. “ It’s right in front of us”

I wrote a short story for school. Please read and tell me what you think!!!!?
Brilliant. A very pleasant well-told story.

    2 things:

1 "Then all of a sudden its delicate wings transformed into much larger ones like an aeroplane and it took off". Aeroplanes don't have wings that transform in to larger ones. Though I like the sense of size that this simile produces.

2 How does her daughter know that the bird before them is the same as the one 30 years previously? The main character has mentioned nothing specific about its appearance that would make it so instantly recognisable. If you do describe something remarkable about it it would deal with this problem and give the bird a sense of character that would make it stand out from all the other potential birds in the world.

I hope this is useful to you. It is a very good story. You deserve full marks.
Reply:It's beautiful, I like the vocab u used in describing.

But there's something with the 'bird ' plot..I don't know what exactly..I think you got a bit carried away out of your main point
Reply:alot of explination for a bird might be trying a little too hard
Reply:I love it!! The visuals were great and I liked the story. Also the end was funny. It vaguely reminded me of Harry Potter.

    I'd give it a 9/10

I think it reminded me of HP because I though of professor Mcgonagal when she was watching the Dursleys as a cat.
Reply:I liked it. It had great visuals, and almost a mysterious tone to it. You could hear the background music as you got lost in the story. Besides a few grammatical errors, I think it is great! I wish there were a whole novel to go with it. LOL!

I have 2 itchy callous like bumps on one finger?

they have been there for about 3- 4months and getting itchier as time goes on. They are hard and discoloured. The skin around them is red with the centre being yellowish. I don't think they are warts and I don't think callous' are itchy. They are on my middle finger, on my left hand and would not be there due to gardening, using a tool, etc. any ideas? thanks

I have 2 itchy callous like bumps on one finger?
Seemingly strange question, but do you garden without gloves? If you do, there's a chance that you're having an allergic reaction to one of the plants you handle. Even on your left hand it could be due to that when your hands come in contact with each other. But either way, since it's been so long and they seem to be getting worse, you should definitely make an appointment with your doctor so they can take a look at it. It's probably nothing major, but it's best to let them take a look. If something weird like that happens again, you may want to see a doc a little sooner, like after a few weeks.
Reply:Go to a dermatologist to make sure it is not cancer or something. I was going to say warts before I read the rest of your question...it still might be?
Reply:go to the doctor it could be a sign of something serious.
Reply:Which finger? Could be from using your fingers. Could be funky warts. Go to the dermatologist.
Reply:have the Dr check them =could be an infection and they can shave them off for you and give you an antibiotic to help heal the finger

    Yours sincere

7N/8D In Kuala lumpur Help choose from attractions.?
Hi, a lot of places you want to visit. Since you will be in Jalan Raja Laut, some of the place can be reached either by walking or monorail.

First of all, you must decide which places you really want to see. You can also rgoup this shopping center together since they are just walking distance from each other: Berjaya Time Square, Low Yat Plaza, Sungai Wang Plaza and Lot 10.

Then Central Market, and Petaling Street can be grouped together. From Petaling Street, you can walk to Masjik Jamek Station wherein it is a walking distance to Little India.

Zoo Negara is a bit far from Jalan Raja Laut but not that far. You can take the Putra LRT and go down to Wangsa Maju Station, from there you can take the taxi, it won't be that far.

FRIM and Templar Park is a bit farther. It is better you go with someone.

Ask help from your hotel when you arrive. Most Malaysians are helpful so they will try to find out for you how to get to most places.

There's not much thing in Sogo but near Quality Hotel so go ahead and visit it. Go to the site below and find out more where to go in KL. Enjoy your stay.
Reply:You won't be able to cover all of this in your remaing 3 days. Depending on what you want to shop for, you can try Low Yat for technology/cameras etc. and Little India for some bargins.

I wouldn't worry about visiting the National Zoo as it is boring and depressing.
Reply:i can't answer all bcos i don't live in KL.

Berjaya Times Square,Low Yat,Sungei wang,Lot 10 are near to each other-take Monorail LRT and it has many stops to these places,eg: Station Imbi directly in front Times Square and very, very near to Sungei Wang and Low Yat.

Midvalley-take KTM Komuter until MidValley station.

Sogo-take Star LRT until Bandaraya Station. I don't know what is Little India, but near Sogo there is a road called Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman where many, many shops sell cloth, fabric, silk (much like india i guess?)

One Utama-i rarely went there bcos there's no LRT connection. But u can still take a cab or bus there.

have fun in KL.U'll be surprised how big the shopping mall is (especially MidValley,Times Square)
